Commentary

Part of the first satellite program designed to study and monitor the planet’s landmasses, Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-1), later renamed Landsat 1, was launched on July 23, 1972, and orbited Earth approximately 14 times daily until January 1978. This photograph of Lake Powell in Utah (indicated by the black squiggly lines in the bottom left) was taken at 11:00 a.m. on August 6, 1972, from an altitude of 914 kilometers. In the infrared image, trees, crops, and other green plants are pictured in bright red, while suburban areas with sparse vegetation are pink, and barren lands are gray. In 1972, new images of Earth revolutionized the way people considered the planet and the environment, and today Google Earth makes such imagery accessible to anyone via the internet.
